Artists' Hospital

“Artists’ Hospital” is La Juan Gallery’s commitment to a different kind of performance training—dynamic and decidedly non-academic. It’s not a course designed as a business venture or a platform for networking and connections: it’s a space for those who enroll today so that they will become the creators of tomorrow’s scene. Our greatest reward isn’t profit, but seeing the creative growth of the people who come through here, transforming them into performers everyone wants to invite, including La Juan. “Artists’ Hospital” is a course, but also a system for nurturing and expanding the performative potential in Spain. We want to “cure” any creative ailment: stagnation, lack of inspiration, a need for development, a desire to collaborate, or even more bureaucratic and managerial blocks. We envision this “hospital” like those 19th-century mountain clinics where intellectuals went to breathe fresh air and absorb new ideas through conversations with other “patients”: a cure for body and soul through exchange.

That's why we say it's also a haven for ideas. Here we work on everything that academia usually leaves out: how to launch a production, how to connect the work with the public, how to promote it, how to network, and how to consider the profitability of artistic work without losing its meaning. It's an eminently practical, action-oriented, living course, like performance art itself. A course where the important thing is to be present when things happen. At La Juan, the speakers—curators, performers, activists, playwrights, journalists and communicators, cultural managers, photographers, and art directors—share what you won't find in books, in an intimate space that fosters participation. That's why the group is limited to a maximum of 16 students per session.

On a creative level, the goal is for each participant to find their own source material: their experience, personality, interests, and poetics. We will explore presence, time, and the relationship between the body and space, while also investigating languages linked to post-dramatic art, multimedia, and net-formance. Practical exercises will be key in equipping us with tools that allow us to harness creative impulse, gain confidence, and develop speed. In addition, there will be sessions open to the public so that performers can test their pieces in real exhibition conditions.
